Today I took Sammie to her vet and she was put to sleep. In the days leading up, it was hard to look at her and know that her time was limited, that she was enjoying her last beautiful day, eating her last meal, etc. We have looked for a new home for her for many months but found nothing. She is old, has medical issues and was limping more and more. She wasn't a dog that voiced pain but it was obvious in the way she walked and tried to run or go up steps. After talking with our vet and the local shelter, we decided this was our only option. She got a shot. I sat on the floor next to her and she got tired and acted a bit drunk. She was relaxed and not anxious at all. They gave her another shot and she was out of it but her heart was still beating. Soon it slowed and she stopped breathing.
She was always a bit of an odd dog. Not your typical Lab. She was possessive of her toys and her food. She growled and snarled a lot. She wasn't fond of people and she only "tolerated" me. She loved Tom. She is in doggy heaven where she can run without pain! Here she is with her buddy Kiwi.
